Coronavirus Watch

Monday, August 16

The number of weekly COVID-19 deaths is now rising in more than three-quarters of the states amid the delta-variant surge in the U.S.

The latest tally shows more than 4,800 deaths in a week, according to a USA TODAY analysis of Johns Hopkins University data. That's more than triple the figure in early July.

Hospitalizations have hit pandemic highs among all ages under 50, the CDC reports. And total new infections are still rising in almost every state.

It's Monday, and this is Coronavirus Watch from the USA TODAY Network. Here's more news you need to know.

The Texas Supreme Court stepped in Sunday evening to block lower-court orders that had allowed Dallas and San Antonio – and cities, counties and schools across Texas – to impose mask mandates contrary to an executive order by Gov. Greg Abbott.
CVS and Walgreens pharmacies began administering the newly authorized third shots to individuals with immunocompromising conditions. The director of the National Institutes of Health says the U.S. could decide in the next couple of weeks whether to offer booster shots to Americans this fall.
As hospitalizations in Escambia County in Florida climb to levels not seen so far in the pandemic and schools are back in session, the growing number of children hospitalized with COVID-19 has experts worried.

Today's numbers: The U.S. has reported more than 36.7 million COVID-19 cases and 621,700 deaths, according to data from Johns Hopkins University. Worldwide, there have been more than 207.4 million cases and more than 4.3 million deaths. About 60% of people in the U.S. and 72% of U.S. adults have received at least one vaccine shot, and about 50% of people in U.S. are fully vaccinated, according to the CDC.
