Dave here, in for Allison who is on mandatory vacation (mandated by me). So while she's sleeping in, you're stuck with me for the week. Let's get into it.
💻 FACEBOOK MEGAHACK
Just when you thought Facebook had exhausted all methods of angering its customers, the company confirmed Saturday that hackers obtained personal information from more than a half billion accounts. That includes people's full names, location, birthday, email addresses, phone number, and relationship status.
At this point, hack, schmack, amirite? All your information is already out there on the dark web, just waiting for hackers to exploit. In fact, this "old" Facebook information was part of a 2019 data breach, which Facebook was quick to note in its statement.
WHY IT MATTERS Although cybercriminals already had access to much of the information stolen from Facebook, it's still incredibly useful. Bad guys can piece together dossiers of real people, connecting information they obtained from Facebook to information they got from elsewhere – credit card information, Social Security numbers, home addresses, etc. They can then sell complete profiles of people on the dark web to scammers who can steal people's identities and money. Fun!
🗳️ AMAZON'S ON EDGE
Amazon reallyreallyreally doesn't want its warehouse employees in Bessemer, Alabama, to unionize. The workers voted on its unionization effort two weeks ago, and we're still awaiting the results.
In the meantime, my colleague Sara O'Brien detailed the remarkable lengths Amazon took in its effort to undermine the potential union:
Vox reported the directive to get super aggressive against the union came from CEO Jeff Bezos himself, who is none-too-happy about how Amazon's good name has been dragged through the mud. CNN Business could not confirm reports that he was found weeping into 185 billion one-dollar bills.
MY TWO CENTS Amazon says it already offers what the employees are asking for: $15 minimum wage, good benefits that start on day one, growth opportunities and a safe work environment. That's awesome, but, like, when the US government is getting super aggressive about antitrust and workers are complaining about working conditions, making fun of Bernie and getting snarky on Twitter isn't the best look.
NUMBER OF THE DAY 64% That's the average energy saved by companies that retrofitted their old motors with motors from Turntide, a startup backed by Amazon, Bill Gates and actor Robert Downey Jr.
📵 A REQUIEM FOR LG PHONES
LG is a ubiquitous tech brand, selling popular appliances, televisions and a whole bunch of other gadgets and gizmos. It just couldn't hack it in the smartphone world.
Don't worry, LG. The list of big-named tech companies that couldn't sell smartphones is long and growing (looking at you, Sony, HTC, Nokia and BlackBerry).
But LG's path to smartphone obsolescence was a strange one: It was a top-3 brand as recently as 2013. Now it commands less than 2% of the smartphone market, my colleague Michelle Toh notes.
WHAT HAPPENED? The problem is that LG's phones just didn't stand out. There was nothing particularly bad about them, but there was nothing really great about them, either. They functioned, looked and were priced about the same as an iPhone or Samsung – so why not just get one of those?
It's a shame, because LG was testing some really fun, quirky stuff, including the dual-screen LG Wing that featured a second screen that flipped horizontally Iron-Man style. It also had a concept phone with a screen that stretched into a tablet. LG was a strange mix of an ultra-conservative main brand with a truly revolutionary side business. The combination just wasn't quite right. You'll be missed (by me, at least)!
WHAT ELSE IS GOING ON?
⚖️ The Supreme Court ruled in favor of Google against Oracle in a decade-long, multibillion-dollar copyright case.
✈️ Delta had to cancel so many flights this weekend that it temporarily started booking middle seats a month before it said it would. It was fun while it lasted.
🍦McDonald's has a new Caramel Brownie McFlurry and … wait, I can't think of anything snarky to say. That actually sounds really good.
🍿'Godzilla vs. Kong' was the best-performing movie of the pandemic. My review: It's a fantastic movie if you ignore the plot.
🌴LinkedIn employees worldwide are getting a paid week off starting today to prevent burnout. Similarly, I had to disable LinkedIn notifications to prevent myself from going insane.
