Coronavirus Watch

Tuesday, May 18

With more than a third of the U.S. population fully vaccinated, rates of vaccination uptick across the country are slowing, and cities and states are trying to find creative ways to incentivize the shots.

That's why Ohioans on Tuesday began registering for the Vax-a-Million lottery and a chance to claim $1 million cash prizes or college scholarships if they can prove receiving at least one shot. Drawings for the lottery, designed to combat vaccine hesitancy, are scheduled to take place on five consecutive Wednesdays starting May 26 on live TV.

"We have heard that local health departments and pharmacies are seeing more people coming in to get vaccinated," Gov. Mike DeWine said. "This is great news!" Read more here.

It's Tuesday, and this is the Coronavirus Watch from the USA TODAY Network. Here's more news you need to know:

Vaccination rates in the U.S. are lower in rural counties than in urban ones, according to a Centers for Disease Control and Prevention analysis released Tuesday. It found rural counties had a rate of about 39% compared to 46% in urban counties.
Early data indicates vaccines being used in the U.S. are effective against the variant now devastating India, Dr. Anthony Fauci said Tuesday. As of May 8, the B.1.617 variant made up 3% of all cases in the U.S., according to the CDC.
New infections are down in all 50 states, President Joe Biden said Monday, and new infections nationwide are half what they were one month ago. He said the U.S. will send at least 80 million doses of vaccines to other countries by the end of June.
About 39 million families are set to receive monthly child payments beginning on July 15, the Treasury Department said Monday. Monthly advance payments under the Child Tax Credit are the result of Biden's American Rescue Plan, a $1.9 trillion coronavirus-relief package Congress passed in March.

Remember, if you're trying to find a vaccination site near you, just text your ZIP code to 438829 (GETVAX), and you'll get a reply with a list of nearby locations.

Today's numbers: The U.S. has reported more than 32.9 million COVID-19 cases and 586,000 deaths, according to data from Johns Hopkins University. Worldwide, there have been more than 163 million cases and more than 3.3 million deaths. Nearly 48% of people in the U.S. have received at least one vaccine shot, and about 37% are fully vaccinated, according to the CDC.
