Coronavirus Watch

Wednesday, September 15

More than a year and a half into the outbreak, most Americans believe COVID-19 remains a major threat to public health and the U.S. economy, according to a Pew Research Center report released Wednesday.

Despite widespread vaccination efforts, 54% of U.S. adults say the worst of the pandemic is still to come.

The polling data comes after the U.S. reached another pandemic milestone: One of every 500 Americans has died of COVID-19, Johns Hopkins University data shows.

It's Wednesday, and this is Coronavirus Watch from the USA TODAY Network. Here's more news you need to know.

What's the proper treatment for long COVID? Medical centers across the U.S. have opened clinics specifically for long-haulers. But access is far from uniform. Most are in urban areas and many have waiting lists, strict eligibly requirements and few slots for uninsured patients.
Some 2.8 million Americans signed up for health insurance under the Affordable Care Act during a special enrollment period to help people find coverage during the pandemic.
Arizona Attorney General Mark Brnovich on Tuesday filed a legal challenge to the federal requirements for businesses to require COVID-19 vaccinations or weekly testing at companies with 100 or more employees, calling it an overreach.
A Minnesota judge has rejected a request by concerned parents to force a statewide mask mandate in all schools. Ramsey County District Judge Thomas Gilligan said the court was "gravely concerned" about the virus but said the court lacked the legal authority to order Gov. Tim Walz to issue the directive.

Today's numbers: The U.S. has reported more than 41.4 million COVID-19 cases and 665,200 deaths, according to data from Johns Hopkins University. Worldwide, there have been more than 226 million cases and more than 4.6 million deaths. About 63% of people in the U.S. have received at least one vaccine shot, and about 54% are fully vaccinated, according to the CDC. Among U.S. adults, 76% have received at least one shot, and about 65% are fully vaccinated.
