There are tons of news today on the Haitian migrant situation in Del Rio, Texas OnPolitics readers. |
But before we get to that, below: Disappointing news for Democrats. |
A Democratic bill to protect abortion rights nationwide will not receive support from Republican abortion rights advocate Sen. Susan Collins. |
Speaking of abortions ... With abortion effectively banned in Texas, patients are flooding reproductive health clinics in neighboring states and overwhelming the region's fragile abortion infrastructure, according to data shared with The 19th. |

DHS pumps the brakes on horse patrols... for now |
Federal agents policing a makeshift encampment for a surge of migrant Haitians in Del Rio, Texas, have stopped using horse patrols after images surfaced of law enforcement on horseback chasing down migrants. |
The images brought a swift rebuke, with lawmakers criticizing the practice as treating migrants like animals and the Biden administration vowing a swift investigation from the Biden administration. Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas testified this week before Congress about the images. |
Earlier today: A career U.S. diplomat to Haiti has resigned over the Biden administration's "inhumane" decision to send thousands of Haitians attempting to enter the U.S. back to the island nation. |
Ambassador Daniel Foote, a Special Envoy for Haiti, wrote in his resignation letter to Secretary of State Antony Blinken that he could not be associated with the government's "inhumane, counterproductive decision to deport thousands of Haitian refugees." He has been in his post for two months. |
More grim news: Agents along the U.S. southwest border have encountered a staggering number of migrant deaths and carried out a record number of rescues of asylum seekers. Through the end of July, U.S. Customs and Border Protection, which oversees the Border Patrol, counted 383 migrant deaths – on pace to break a record high of 492, set in 2005. |

Some not-so-good poll numbers for Biden |
That's gotta hurt: President Joe Biden's job approval rating has hit a new low eight months into his term, according to a report released Wednesday by analytics firm Gallup. |
The president's approval rating fell six percentage points from August to 43% — the lowest of his presidency, as tallied by Gallup — amid the withdrawal of the U.S. military and the evacuation of over 122,000 people from Afghanistan. Thirteen servicemembers died in a suicide bombing at the airport in Kabul, marking the last casualties of a 20-year conflict. |
A majority, 53%, disapprove of Biden's performance for the first time, according to the report. |
