Pfizer revealed more promising news about its COVID-19 vaccine Wednesday, announcing that a company study found the vaccine to be safe and 100% effective against symptomatic disease in 12 to 15-year-old adolescents. |
The Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine has already been authorized for those age 16 and up, with more than 75 million doses having been administered in the U.S., per data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. |
What about children younger than 12? USA TODAY's Karen Weintraub reports that results from these trials should be available later this year: |
• | Pfizer and BioNTech began testing their vaccine in children ages 5 to 11 last week. | • | The companies will begin testing in children ages 2 to 5 next week. | • | Later, the companies will examine the vaccine for children 6 months to 2 years. | |

• | Another mask mandate bites the dust: The Wisconsin Supreme Court on Wednesday declared Gov. Tony Evers' statewide mask mandate invalid and ruled Evers exceeded his authority in issuing multiple emergency declarations for the pandemic. Wisconsin joins a handful of states that have ended mask mandates in recent weeks, including Arkansas, Texas, Mississippi, Iowa, North Dakota, Wyoming and Montana. | • | All 50 states have announced when they plan to open up vaccinations to all adults — all by May 1. That expansion happens today for residents of Indiana and South Carolina. | • | The U.S. has reported more known coronavirus variants in the last week – nearly 4,300 – than it reported through the middle of March, a USA TODAY analysis of CDC data shows. The country now has 12,053 known cases of variants. | |
