Coronavirus Watch

Tuesday, July 6

Cases of COVID-19 are up in nearly half of U.S. states, a USA TODAY Network analysis of Johns Hopkins University data shows.

Alaska and Arkansas more than doubled cases in the last week.
South Carolina and Kansas are up more than 50%.
In Missouri, hospitalizations jumped by nearly 30% over the weekend.
In Mississippi, cases increased by almost 15% in June. Mississippi's fully vaccinated rate of 31% is the lowest in the nation.

It's Tuesday, and this is the Coronavirus Watch newsletter from the USA TODAY Network. Here's more news you need to know:

Amid concerns over the spread of the delta variant, President Joe Biden is set to deliver remarks Tuesday afternoon about the state of his administration's vaccination effort and the "strong progress" that the U.S. has made as it nears 160 million people fully vaccinated by the week's end, a White House official said.
People in England will no longer be required by law to wear face masks in indoor public spaces and to keep at least 3 feet apart as soon as July 19, the country's designated "Freedom Day.''
As the Summer Olympics draw closer, Japan has fully vaccinated less than 14% of its population, as a recent inoculation push has been undercut by supply shortages.
More than 60 people died when a public hospital on Indonesia's main island of Java ran out of oxygen as COVID-19 rages around the country and oxygen supplies dwindle, said a senior health official.

Today's numbers: The U.S. has reported more than 33.7 million COVID-19 cases and nearly 605,700 deaths, according to data from Johns Hopkins University. Worldwide, there have been more than 184.3 million cases and more than 3.98 million deaths. Nearly 55% of people in the U.S. have received at least one vaccine shot, and about 47% are fully vaccinated, according to the CDC.
