Coronavirus Watch

Wednesday, July 28

For the first time in a month, COVID-19 deaths in the U.S. are once again over 2,000 per week.

New cases are also averaging more than 60,000 per day for the first time in more than three months, a USA TODAY analysis of Johns Hopkins University data found.

The delta variant of the coronavirus has caused a concerning new wave of the pandemic as unvaccinated people bear the brunt of its effects. While breakthrough cases are possible in vaccinated individuals, the unvaccinated account for virtually all hospitalizations and deaths.

It's Wednesday, and this is Coronavirus Watch from the USA TODAY Network. Here's more news you need to know:

President Joe Biden said Tuesday his administration is weighing the possibility of requiring all federal workers to get vaccinated.
States are responding to new CDC guidance recommending fully vaccinated people wear masks indoors in areas with high transmission. Nevada issued an emergency order requiring people in 12 of 17 counties to wear masks in public indoor spaces. And Arkansas Gov. Asa Hutchinson said a special session to revisit the state's ban on mask mandates in schools is an option.
New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo said Wednesday state employees must be vaccinated by Labor Day or face weekly testing, and patient-facing healthcare workers will be mandated to be vaccinated.
The number of deaths globally jumped by 21% in the last week, the World Health Organization said. "If these trends continue, the cumulative number of cases reported globally could exceed 200 million in the next two weeks," the WHO said.
Fully vaccinated Americans can visit England without quarantining beginning Monday, a long-awaited change for travelers.

Today's numbers: The U.S. has reported more than 34.6 million COVID-19 cases and 611,400 deaths, according to data from Johns Hopkins University. Worldwide, there have been more than 195.6 million cases and more than 4.1 million deaths. About 57% of people in the U.S. have received at least one vaccine shot, and about 49% are fully vaccinated, according to the CDC.
