Coronavirus Watch

Tuesday, July 20

U.S. citizens should avoid travel to the United Kingdom because of a spike in cases, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the U.S. State Department said Monday, raising the alert levels for the region to their highest levels.

"Because of the current situation in the United Kingdom, even fully vaccinated travelers may be at risk for getting and spreading COVID-19 variants,'' the CDC said in its update.

The British Virgin Islands, Fiji, Indonesia and Zimbabwe also saw alert levels increase.

Canada, meanwhile, will reopen to fully vaccinated U.S. citizens and permanent residents starting Aug. 9.

It's Tuesday, and this is Coronavirus Watch from the USA TODAY Network. Here's more news you need to know:

There's growing public confidence in the safety and effectiveness of COVID-19 vaccines, a new survey from the Annenberg Public Policy Center of the University of Pennsylvania reveals. Out of the 1,719 U.S. adults surveyed, 78% believe it is definitely or probably true that vaccines are effective — an increase from 74% in April.

Today's numbers: The U.S. has reported more than 34.1 million COVID-19 cases and 609,300 deaths, according to data from Johns Hopkins University. Worldwide, there have been more than 191.1 million cases and more than 4.1 million deaths. About 56% of people in the U.S. have received at least one vaccine shot, and about 49% are fully vaccinated, according to the CDC.

Signs are posted at a store downtown McAllen, Texas, on Friday, July, 16, 2021. U.S. cases of COVID-19 last week increased by 17,000 nationwide over a 14-day period for the first time since late fall, and an increase in death historically follows a spike in illness. Much of the worsening problem is being driven by the delta variant first identified in India, that has since hit the United Kingdom and other countries, said U.S. Surgeon General Dr. Vivek Murthy.
