Coronavirus Watch

Tuesday, July 27

To prevent the spread of the delta variant, fully vaccinated people should now wear a mask in public indoor settings in areas with high COVID-19 transmission, according to new CDC guidance.

The CDC is also recommending universal indoor masking for all teachers, staff, students and visitors inside K-12 schools, regardless of vaccination status.

Dr. Rochelle Walensky, director of the CDC, cited new research Tuesday showing breakthrough cases – infections among fully vaccinated people – though rare, have the potential to transmit with "the same capacity" as in those who are not fully vaccinated.

"This is different now with the delta variant," Walensky said. She added: "The big concern is that the next variant that might emerge, just potentially a few mutations away, could potentially evade our vaccines." More here.

It's Tuesday, and this is Coronavirus Watch from the USA TODAY Network. Here's more news you need to know:

The U.S. is again reporting more than 50,000 new cases daily on a rolling seven-day average as the delta variant sweeps around the country. The country last hit that mark April 30, when cases were falling as vaccines took hold of the pandemic.
Pfizer and Moderna are expanding their vaccine trials for children ages 5 to 11, according to a new report.
At least 70% of adults in the European Union have received a first dose of a vaccine, the European Commission said Tuesday. Around 57% of adults in the EU are currently fully vaccinated.
Tokyo reported its highest number of new cases on Tuesday at 2,848, exceeding the earlier record of 2,520 cases on Jan. 7. The city is under its fourth state of emergency.
The termination of eviction moratoriums in states and municipalities likely led to hundreds of thousands of additional cases and deaths, according to a new study by UCLA researchers.

Today's numbers: The U.S. has reported more than 34.5 million COVID-19 cases and 611,100 deaths, according to data from Johns Hopkins University. Worldwide, there have been more than 195 million cases and more than 4.1 million deaths. About 57% of people in the U.S. have received at least one vaccine shot, and about 49% are fully vaccinated, according to the CDC.
