💡 INSIGHT OF THE DAY: Catalytic converter theft is soaring. I was shocked when I dug into the numbers for this story on how thieves are capitalizing on a huge spike in rare-metal prices. Check out this photo of 87 stolen catalytic converters recently recovered by the Torrance, California police department.

How can you protect yourself? Don't park outside if you have access to a secure indoor space. And try to avoid poorly lit spots no matter where you go. Here are additional tips on how to avoid catalytic converter theft.

The catalytic converter in Chicago resident Sam Horvath's 2004 Honda CR-V has been stolen twice during the COVID-19 pandemic, including just recently in early July 2021. Since the pandemic started, thefts of catalytic converters have soared nationwide as shortages or rare metals caused a spike in prices that have made the devices a particularly enticing target.
