Tuesday, October 5

Good morning, Daily Money folks, it's Josh here again covering for Nathan. 'Tis Tuesday and it feels like it, right?

TIL: Steel is cheaper than lumber when it comes to homebuilding. As the incomparable Swapna Venugopal Ramaswamy reported, the San Mateo-based company Veev, eliminated lumber from the homes it built, replacing it with steel and slabs made of a mix of acrylic and minerals that bind together. "The company says it can build homes at least four times faster than traditional construction at a cheaper price," she says in her story.

There's a joke there about the wolf not being able to blow away the little pig's steel house, but I can't quite figure it out. Email me if you think of a good steel pun!

In other news, there's never a shortage of drama when it comes to Facebook. From massive outages to having its internal documents exposed, the company is having a busy week. But who is Frances Haugen, the whistleblower who is taking on Facebook? Queen, icon, legend Jessica Guynn breaks it down for us here.

Also, we're doing live updates on the Senate hearing here, if you want to follow along.

πŸ“° And here are more stories you won't want to miss:

1. Social Security needs a lifeline. If lawmakers don't act soon, benefit cuts could be a real possibility.

2. Southwest Air Lines is the latest in the industry to add an employee vaccine mandate. Southwest joins American Airlines, Alaska Airlines and JetBlue. Does that impact your decision to travel?

3. If family vacations have a secret season, autumn must be it. Here are 7 family-friendly vacation ideas now that you don't have to worry about sweating every time you step outside (apologies to those not on the East Coast still dealing with heat).

Onward, my friends!
