The Daily Money

Friday, October 1

Good morning, Daily Money team, it's Nathan wishing you a happy weekend ahead!

A pill to reduce the severity of COVID symptoms? It could be close.

Merck this morning announced promising clinical trial results for antiviral drug molnupiravir.

On to our ...

💡 INSIGHT OF THE DAY: Gun companies are ditching the northeast U.S. First, the National Rifle Association announced plans to move its nonprofit registration from New York to Texas in an acknowledged bid to avoid the scrutiny of New York's pro-gun-control political environment. The NRA even went to the extreme length of filing for bankruptcy protection to make it happen. (A judge later dismissed that bankruptcy case as ineligible under federal law.) Now, gun maker Smith & Wesson Brands is moving its headquarters from Massachusetts to Tennessee , saying newly proposed legislation in its home state would prohibit manufacturing some of its products there.

💡 💡 BONUS INSIGHT: Annuities can be a safe and effective way to deliver a dependable income stream in retirement. But dividend-paying stocks can be just as good or better. For example, a $400,000 portfolio with a dividend yield of 3% will deliver $12,000 annually , or about $1,000 per month, on average. And the actual stock will hopefully grow in value over time, too, protecting you from inflation. But, of course, there's a risk that the underlying stocks could decline in value.

⌚ WHAT TO WATCH FOR: Food prices are on the rise. Blame it on all sorts of things, according to reporters Paul Davidson and Kelly Tyko, including labor shortages, supply-chain bottlenecks, strong demand, extreme weather, a surge in exports and COVID outbreaks at meatpacking plants.

📰 And here are more stories you won't want to miss:

1. The Dow had a rough Thursday and a rough month. It was the worst month of the year, in fact.

2. Will it rebound in October? Well I hate to tell you that October is often a volatile month.

3. Another sunscreen recall: This time it's various Coppertone and Pure & Simple products.

4. Younger homeowners can now get a reverse mortgage: But should they?

5. The Federal Housing Administration is extending mortgage forbearance options: Here's what to know if you're struggling to pay.

6. Goodbye, keyfob: You can soon use your new Samsung Galaxy phone as a key to your car.

🔒 Maybe this will help ease the crisis of auto thefts, which, believe it or not, have spiked in no small part because people often leave their keyfobs in vehicles.

That makes it easy for thieves to open the car door, press the push-start button and drive off.
